It is a substance that, together with L-arginine and L-ornithine, participates in the urea cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle. Citrulline is considered an endogenous amino acid that can be produced in the human body through natural synthesis. The compound’s name derives from the Latin word “citrullus,” meaning watermelon, as the first food source from which the amino acid was isolated was watermelon, which remains the primary dietary source of this compound.
